Our History

Bro. Don Gibbs, our Pastor Emeritus,

trusted Christ as his Savior at age 28 on April 26, 1972. After serving as a Sunday School teacher, church bus driver, and youth department assistant, God began dealing with his heart about full-time Christian work. Through the guidance of his pastor, Dr. Curtis Hutson of the Forrest Hills Baptist Church in Decatur, GA, God showed Bro. Don Gibbs and his wife, Sylvia, His precious will. In August of 1976, he moved back to Vidalia, GA and began full-time Christian work in the church that he was saved in. God began burdening his heart for Lyons, GA, and on January 1, 1978, Bro. Gibbs, his wife, and six friends established the Liberty Baptist Church in Lyons.

Since the meeting of 45 charter members in the basement of an old garden club, God tremendously blessed their faithfulness. In 1978, the church purchased its first building on South Victory Drive - an old Catholic church. Since then, the church has undergone many building projects including the addition of an educational building, a 600 seat auditorium, and a fellowship hall. Through the years, people and buildings have changed, but the mission to win souls has not. The first Sunday of January 2008, we celebrated 30 years of "Loving God, Loving People."
